Lully, Jean-Baptiste (1632-1687)
Description:
Sangalid, daughter of the river god Sangal, son of Neptune and betrothed to Serenus, king of Phrygia. She secretly has feelings for her relative, the beautiful boy Atis, who is also in love with Sangalid. Meanwhile, Sibel, the earth goddess who loves Atis, descends and tells him of her love. Sangalid and Attis confirm their love for each other, suffering from their own fiancee and disloyalty to the goddess. However, Sangalid loses his life at the hands of Attis due to the punishment inflicted by the goddess Sibel, who is enraged to see this. The lyric tragedy "Atys," Lully's fourth opera, premiered in 1676 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye for Louis XIV, was highly acclaimed at the time of its premiere, thanks to Philippe Quinault's meticulous libretto and Lully's elegant music. However, it has been lost in history and has not been performed for a long time. It was not until 1987, the 300th anniversary of Lully's death, that the work was brought back into the spotlight. William Christie, who also conducts wonderfully in this video, revived the work, and the historic success led to performances in many parts of the world. This video is a record of the 2011 performance at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, and the gorgeous and authentic production that recreates the style, costumes, and equipment of the first performance without aiming for novelty or eccentricity is stunning.Christie's fluent and crisp tact brings the whole performance together, with notable singers from the world of ancient music such as Emmanuel de Negri, Bernard Richter, and Stephanie Dusztruck. This release is a new edition of the disc originally released by FRA Musica in 2011, with Japanese subtitles added. It does not include the bonus video that was included with the initial release.
