Peter Shepherd Scavezz, known for “The Great Violins” series, in which he performs works for violin composed between the 17th and 18th centuries using period instruments. Although this album is not part of that series, it features performances on period instruments, focusing primarily on rare collections of pieces published during the same era by the publisher John Walsh. Although each piece is brief—lasting only about one to two minutes—the collection brings together works of diverse charm, ranging from renowned composers such as Purcell, Biber, Pepusch, Corelli, and Trelli to anonymous composers who likely served the royal court, making this a historically significant recording. The instruments used are those that were part of the court orchestra of King Charles II of England. Also included on this recording are works by Thomas Walzer, a native of Lübeck who served as the leader of Charles II’s famous orchestra, “The Twenty-Four Violins.” His German-style playing technique is said to have had a strong influence on English composers. These pieces are performed on an Amati violin made in 1629. Naxos Japan
