A collection of Russian-themed music for clarinet and orchestra by Robin White, an arranger and conductor based in the United Kingdom. Masterpieces such as Tchaikovsky’s “Andante cantabile,” art songs, and the famous “Gopik” from Mussorgsky’s opera have been reimagined as innovative orchestral works featuring a clarinet solo. Even the accompaniment part of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Clarinet Concerto”—originally performed by a wind ensemble and clarinet—has undergone a magnificent transformation. White’s original “Russian Suite” is also a lively piece in which the clarinet takes center stage. The melodies used are quintessentially Russian, and it is an enjoyable work that captures the essence of Russian folk songs. In Monti’s “Csárdás,” placed at the end, the highlight is the clarinet’s virtuosic playing, set against a cleverly arranged orchestral accompaniment. The clarinetist here is Ian Scott, principal clarinetist of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. He also leads a busy life as a freelance musician. Naxos Japan
