Description:

In the 19th century, it was primarily thanks to Mendelssohn that the works of J.S. Bach—which had previously been largely overlooked—were revived; however, Schumann, who lived during the same period, also held a deep affection for Bach’s works and was strongly influenced by them. In his later years in particular, Schumann revisited Bach’s works, and In 1851, he revised the orchestration of the *St. John Passion* by adding a trumpet part, and in 1853, he undertook various other experiments, such as adding piano accompaniment to unaccompanied violin and cello pieces. Furthermore, in 1843, the Schumanns acquired a “pedal piano” (also known as a “pedal flügel,” or a piano with a pedalboard). This was intended for performing Bach’s organ works at home. Schumann’s passion for fugues seemed to grow stronger over time, and this culminated in the “Etudes for Pedal Piano” and “Six Fugues in the Name of Bach,” both included in this album. The album title, “Roots and Flowers,” is taken from the advice composer Carl Nielsen gave to his friend Ture Langström: “Don’t try to create flowers right away; start with the roots.” Impressed by this, Danish organist Jens E. Christensen, deeply moved by this advice, adopted the title as a tribute to Schumann. Please enjoy the high-quality sound captured by DigitaleXtremeDefinition—which fully captures the magnificent resonance of the organ completed when Bach was 13 years old—on this SACD hybrid disc.
