French composer Henri Dutilleux. Throughout his life, he continued to explore his own unique sound, creating a new sonic language that was influenced by no one. This album features works spanning a 40-year period from 1948 to 1988, illustrating the evolution of Dutilleux’s style. The 1948 Piano Sonata is the largest of Dutilleux’s piano works and one of the most frequently performed. While he adheres to traditional sonata form here, he would subsequently attempt to deliberately turn his back on that form. The 1953 piano version of *The Wolf* is the world’s first recording of this work. Commissioned by Laurent Petit’s dance company and premiered in Paris, this ballet score depicts the tragic love story of “The Wolf and the Beauty”; this recording features the original version, prior to its expansion into a richly colored orchestral work. The “Three Preludes” are short yet tension-filled works that Dutilleux called “a kind of study in timbre”; No. 1 is dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, No. 2 to Claude Elfer, and No. 3 to Eugène Istomin—each dedicated to a pianist who was Dutilleux’s contemporary. Jean-Pierre Armangeau (1943–) is a French pianist. He is highly regarded as a musicologist for his publications on composers such as Satie and Dutilleux, as well as Russian composer Edison Denisov, and for his critical biography of the painter Jean Dubuffet.
