Balakirev, one of the “Russian Five.” Although he was a pioneer in promoting Russian music and played a leading role in uniting the group, he was reportedly highly self-critical and skeptical of his own compositions. At one point, he withdrew from the music world and worked as a clerk for the St. Petersburg–Warsaw Railway, among other things, and it is known that he lived through a period of twists and turns and setbacks. Perhaps because of this, he left behind relatively few works; however, his piano pieces—including his masterpiece “Islamey”—are all accessible compositions that boast the brilliant virtuosity inherited from the traditions of Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. This box set includes all of Balakirev’s diverse works, ranging from original compositions to arrangements of works by his predecessors. Nicholas Walker, who recorded this entire series, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Moscow Conservatory. In addition to being highly acclaimed for his Beethoven interpretations, he is recognized as a Balakirev specialist, having organized the 2010 “Balakirev Centennial Commemoration” in the UK.
