Description:
The mandolin is a plucked string instrument that originated in Italy. By the 17th century, it was not only used to add color to operas, oratorios, and chamber music, but was also highly regarded as a solo instrument. Composers active at the time, including Niccolò Ceccherini, wrote works for the mandolin. This album focuses on the “Six Partitas” by Filippo Sauri—a composer who is virtually unknown today—and introduces outstanding mandolin solo pieces that were popular at the time. Sauli’s partitas blend French and Italian traditions and are characterized by their beautiful use of tremolo. The album also includes works by Ceccherini and Cappellini—featuring world premiere recordings—as well as one piece from *The Book of the Mandolin*, compiled in 1703. The performer, Davide Ferrera, is a mandolinist from L’Aquila, Italy, born in 1992. He has collaborated with numerous ensembles, primarily in Italy, and continues to promote the appeal of the mandolin. His 2020 release, “Alligoni: TIRANNIAFFETTI—The Influence of Tyrants: A Collection of Works for Mandolin and Voice” (CDS-7878), has been highly acclaimed across various circles. Naxos Japan
