Lyadov is known for his grand orchestral works based on Russian folk tales—such as the symphonic poems “The Enchanted Lake” and “Kikimora”—as well as his romantic piano pieces that carry on the tradition of Chopin. He also left behind numerous choral works. While many of these works fall into three categories—religious works, folk song arrangements, and original compositions—they all possess a beauty underpinned by exquisite craftsmanship. Many of the pieces included on this album are based on Russian folk songs, yet these simple melodies have been transformed into magnificent a cappella choral works that make full use of the lower registers. The album also includes works written in unusual formats, such as “Ave Maris Stella,” accompanied by a four-hand harmonium duet, and “Slava” (meaning “Glory”), accompanied by a two-piano, eight-hand duet, offering a glimpse into Lyadov’s ingenuity. The Russian Conservatory Chamber Choir is an ensemble founded in 2016 by Ivan Nikiforchin. Together with the Russian Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, it maintains a broad repertoire centered on Russian music composed in the 20th and 21st centuries. Naxos Japan
