Pianist Cordelia Williams has released three albums on the SOMM label to date. This latest album was conceived with the idea of creating music that offers comfort to those spending sleepless nights in loneliness and anxiety. It features a diverse collection of pieces, ranging from the melancholic “Lonely Pavane for These Troubled Times” by the Renaissance composer Tomkins to Bill Evans’s “PeacePiece.” Mozart’s “Fantasy,” in which dreams and nightmares intertwine, followed by Scriabin’s Sonata No. 2, composed of two movements that depict the calm and the storm of the night sea; after a moment of respite with Liszt’s “Consolation,” the album features Schubert’s Sonata No. 19, with its thrilling musical ideas that seem to wander through the pitch-black darkness of the night. This is followed by works by Tomkins and Evans, and the program concludes with Schumann’s “Song of Dawn,” which evokes the atmosphere of morning. This carefully crafted program succinctly expresses the contradictions, confusion, and fear of the night, alongside its tenderness and longing for light, and is dedicated to the many people who “feel lonely in the darkness.” Naxos Japan
