A superb program that also features works by other geniuses active in 17th-century France Jean-Baptiste Lully was the founder of the lyric tragedy (tragédie lyrique)—the most classical form of French opera—and had a profound influence on German-speaking music through his overtures and dance pieces. Although his importance in music history is widely recognized, opportunities in Japan to truly appreciate his achievements in the field of theatrical music—which could be considered his true forte—are few and far between. Against this backdrop, with the invaluable cooperation of the Versailles Baroque Music Center, the Alpha label—which has long supported France’s early music scene—presents a superb compilation album that allows listeners to fully savor these works on a single CD. Led by Véronique Gens—who is now highly acclaimed even for her performances of Romantic and modern works—this collection brings together the elite of the French early music scene to present excerpts from various works by Lully, interwoven with masterpieces by his successors and rivals, presented as a five-act lyrical tragedy depicting “a woman who is both strong yet tormented by love” (with booklet notes by Benoît Dratovitzki, a scholar renowned for his deep expertise in little-known French theatrical music). From the sorrows and despair of love to the rage fueled by revenge and the ecstasy of joy, the ensemble masterfully weaves these ever-changing works—made possible by Lully’s skillful use of sound—into a cohesive narrative. Under the baton of the rapidly rising French conductor Bastion de Cambra, the instrumental ensemble—whose interpretation skillfully captures the subtle nuances characteristic of French early music—holds its own against Jans’s overwhelming presence, with both elements complementing each other to create a vibrant musical experience.
