Description:
William Primrose (1904-82), born in Scotland, was one of the leading viola players of the 20th century. After playing in England, he came to the U.S. in 1937 to play with the NBC Symphony Orchestra led by Toscanini, and was also active in the Primrose Quartet formed by members of the NBC Symphony and in a trio with Heifetz and Piatigorsky. He gradually shifted his emphasis from performing to teaching. This disc reissues recordings he made for RCA in 1939 and 1941, when he was at the height of his powers, and surprisingly, 14 of the 23 tracks are being released for the first time. Although they were recorded, they never saw the light of day due to the effects of World War II. Through a number of small pieces, one can enjoy Primrose's highly skilled interpretation. Primrose shared Kreisler's playing and participated in the recording of his string quartets. On this album, Primrose also performs a number of Kreisler's works and arrangements, many of which feature Franz Rupp, Kreisler's trusted pianist. Naxos Japan
