Suddenly, Mamma Agata—the mother of the supporting soprano, Luigia—bursts in, demanding, “Give my daughter a better role!” The leading prima donna, Dalia, gets into a huge argument with Agata. The leading tenor, Guglielmo; the composer, Biscroma; the librettist, Cesare; and the theater manager—each begins making their own demands, throwing the rehearsal into total chaos... Donizetti’s *The Theatre’s Conveniences and Inconveniences* (*Viva la Mamma*) is one of the masterpieces from the composer’s middle period. Based on the one-act *The Theatre’s Conveniences*, which was well-received upon its 1827 premiere, the composer himself revised the work, and it premiered as a two-act opera in 1831. It features self-indulgent singers and a stage mom who forcefully pushes for her daughter to be cast in the lead role. The story, brimming with humor and satire, unfolds briskly to the tune of Donizetti’s lively music. The 2017 production from the Lyon Opera House, directed by Roland Perry and included here, is a unique staging in which scenes from past opera rehearsals appear like a phantom in the auditorium of a former opera house in a rural town—a building now converted into a parking lot. Laurent Naouri, in drag, delivers a masterful performance as Mamma Agata, while Patrizia Cofi gives a brilliant portrayal of the feisty prima donna. They are supported by an outstanding ensemble of singers. The baton of the talented Lorenzo Viotti maintains a consistently light and lively pace, and combined with Perry’s direction and the singers’ superb vocal performances, it ensures this delightful opera holds the listener’s attention from start to finish.
