A profound and vivid stage production directed by Keith Warner: *The Painter Matisse* Matisse, a religious painter, helped Schwalp—the leader of the Lutheran peasant rebellion—and his daughter Regina escape. Officer Silvestr, who had been pursuing them, confronts Matisse, but because Matisse is a favorite of Archbishop Albrecht, he is not arrested. When the archbishop intervened to stop a brawl between Catholics, Lutherans, and students, he accepted a proposal from the Lutheran merchant Riedinger to “ban book burnings.” However, after being reprimanded by his vicar, Lorenz, he ultimately signed a document authorizing the book burnings. As books were burned one after another at Riedinger’s mansion, following Luther’s advice, talks arose of a marriage between Riedinger’s daughter, Ursula, and the archbishop. However, it was Matis whom Ursula loved. Matthias tells her, “I am a participant in the Peasants’ War, so I cannot marry you,” and leaves her. After that, the fighting intensifies… *The Painter Mathis* is a seven-act opera for which Hindemith wrote the libretto based on the 16th-century German religious painter Matthias Grünewald, and which he composed between 1934 and 1935. Set in the early 16th century following the Reformation, the story—which centers on a Lutheran peasant rebellion—was viewed as an indirect criticism of the political system in Germany at the time of its composition. Consequently, the Berlin premiere planned for 1935, to be conducted by Furtwängler, was banned by the Nazis. While still working on the libretto for this opera, Hindemith, at Furtwängler’s request, composed the symphony *The Painter Matisse* using material from the opera; this work premiered before the opera and was a huge success. However, the ban on the opera’s performance sparked the infamous “Hindemith Affair,” causing a sensation both in Germany and abroad. The staging in this video is by Keith Warner, renowned for his theatrical opera productions, and features a massive statue of Christ on the cross placed on stage that changes its appearance as the story progresses. Against this backdrop, the fierce conflict between the Lutheran and Catholic factions unfolds, with the protagonist Matthias (Wolfgang Koch)—who is torn between the two sides and tormented by his inner turmoil—at the center. set to Hindemith’s vivid music conducted by Bertrand de Billy, an outstanding cast of singers delivers nuanced performances rich in emotional depth.
