Great Women Great Women was commissioned by the Great Music in Irish House Festival, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2020. The work, by composer Grania Mulvey, celebrates women who have been active socially and politically in Ireland, and is based on letters from Rosie Hackett (1893-1976), a founding member of the Irish Women's Trade Union, and Countess Markievicz ( 1868-1927), read by Elizabeth Hilliard using a variety of vocal techniques. Incorporated therein are excerpts from recordings (tapes) of inaugural speeches by former Irish presidents Mary Robinson (in office 1990-1997), Mary McAleese (in office 1997-2011), and others.
