There he meets Marietta, a dancer who bears an uncanny resemblance to Marie. Gradually, the line between dream and reality begins to blur for Paul… A live recording of Korngold’s opera *The City of the Dead*, performed at the Bavarian State Opera in the fall of 2019. Featuring Simon Stone’s strikingly memorable staging and Kirill Petrenko’s conducting—which meticulously drew out the orchestra’s beautiful, intoxicating melodies—this production, with Jonas Kaufmann and Marlis Petersen in the lead roles, was met with overwhelming acclaim from audiences and the media alike. Highlights include Kaufmann’s compelling performance, which teeters on the edge of madness; Petersen’s nuanced portrayal of the various facets of womanhood; and the superb singing of the ensemble surrounding them. The Bavarian State Opera traces its origins to the court opera of the Elector of Bavaria, founded in the 17th century, and is one of Germany’s most prestigious opera houses, with a history of premiering operas by Mozart and Wagner.
