A masterpiece by the young Mozart, conducted by the brilliant Diego Fasolis! Mayor Don Anquise is infatuated with Sandrina, the live-in gardener at his estate. Today, he’s trying to woo her once again. Meanwhile, the servant Nardo is head over heels for the maid Serpetta. But Serpetta brushes him off, saying she prefers younger men. Just then, the mayor’s niece, Arminda, arrives accompanied by Count Belfiore. In fact, this count is the former lover of Violante—who now goes by the name Sandrina. Driven by jealousy, he had stabbed Violante (Sandrina) and fled. Violante had been hiding out at the mayor’s house as a female gardener in order to search for Belfiore, and her valet, Roberto, had also changed his name to Nardo and was living there as well. Belfiore realizes that Sandrina bears a striking resemblance to Violante, who was supposed to be dead, but… In 1775, Mozart’s opera *The False Gardener*, composed just before his 19th birthday, premiered at the Salvatores Theater in Munich. Although this work was performed in Italian, it was one of Mozart’s favorites; he later adapted it into a German Singspiel himself and expanded the two-part overture with additional movements to turn it into a symphony. The young Mozart’s exceptional talent shines through in the work’s many captivating musical moments, including the duet between Violante and Belfiore. This production follows the staging by Frederick Wake-Walker, which premiered at the 2014 Glyndebourne Festival; however, for the 2018 revival at La Scala, the La Scala Orchestra switched to period instruments and featured a stellar cast including Kresimir Spicer and Julie Martin-du-Taille, while early music authority Diego Fasolis conducted the performance, bringing it all together with richly nuanced expression and a lively tempo.
