Born in Glasgow in 1936, conductor Ian Sutherland became the conductor of the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra in 1966, where his performances of mainly light music won him wide popularity until the orchestra's reformation in 1972. In the 1980s, he became the first principal conductor of the BBC Radio Orchestra, a position he held until its dissolution in 1991, Until the orchestra's dissolution in 1991, he was credited with performing numerous Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary works, as well as Hollywood and Broadway musicals. This album contains recordings made with the Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in 1988 and 1992, and offers a variety of works by 16 composers spanning three centuries.This is a delightful disc in which one hears a succession of masterpieces that are pleasing to the ear, including the festive prelude from Charpentier's "Te Deum," the rarely heard "Nanette's Fantasy" by Coleridge-Taylor, and the frenetic "Dance of the Sword" by Khachaturian.
