The work was originally conceived as a string quintet by Brahms before he turned 30 and later revised into the Sonata for two pianos (Op. 34b) and then into the Piano Quintet (Op. 34), which has been restored to its original form based on many sources. The coupling is the Piano Trio, which was discovered in 1938 and has been falsely attributed. This is a piece that offers a glimpse into an unknown side of a great composer. Naxos Japan
