Sofia Opera’s “The Ring of the Nibelung,” Part 2: “Die Walküre” This is the second installment of the “Ring” cycle presented by the Sofia Opera in Bulgaria, which made a strong impression with its previous production, the opera “Das Rheingold.” *Die Walküre*, one of the most popular operas in the four-part *Ring* cycle, is packed with highlights, including the duet between Siegmund and Sieglinde in Act I, the “Ride of the Valkyries” in Act II, and “Wotan’s Farewell and the Music of the Magic Fire” in the final act. In this production of *Die Walküre*, the staging—which has become even more pop-oriented than in *Das Rheingold*—is truly surprising. The large ring and cone used as stage props in *Das Rheingold* are carried over into this production as well, appearing in various scenes—such as the cone resembling a rocket warhead ridden by the Valkyries and the ring of fire surrounding the rocky mountain where Brünnhilde sleeps. This production once again brings together a cast of talented Bulgarian singers dressed in costumes reminiscent of characters from special-effects monster movies. Among them, Martin Iliev, who sings the role of Siegmund, is a talented tenor who gained popularity for his portrayal of Calaf in *Turandot* during the Sofia National Opera’s 2015 tour of Japan. His dignified performance and singing as Siegmund in Act I truly shine. Under the baton of Pavel Balev, Wagner’s music is even more dramatic than in the previous production. This *Valkyrie*—the third and fourth installments of the Sofia Ring—leaves us eagerly anticipating what’s to come. Naxos Japan
