Description:

French Renaissance church music in a large orchestra with instrumental music! French music of the Renaissance is particularly famous for polyphonic chansons by composers such as Jeanquin, Sermisi, and Costre, but there are also many masterpieces of church music. In particular, Calvinist Protestant church music has already revealed its charms through numerous old music ensembles. On the other hand, the royal family was a predominantly Catholic congregation. Claude Lejeune, who lived through a period of religious wars that sometimes resulted in bloody massacres, and who was able to provide music for both Catholic worship and Protestant prayer, is an important representative of the fertility of Renaissance polyphonic music in France, which was steadily transformed in the 16th century. His works have also been widely recorded a capella, but this album, produced in 2002, features many core members of groups at the forefront of the ancient music world such as Le Poème Armonique and La Fenice, under the direction of master Schneeberli, who is active in the vocal department of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. The performance is "with instrumental music," with 18 children's chorus members and 18 adult singers, plus an extensive ancient music instrument ensemble, and is a world of exquisite beauty. The sound, recorded in a Paris hospital chapel by the genius engineer Hugues Déchaud, is also extremely vivid and rich, and the more one listens to this masterpiece, the more one appreciates it. This is a valuable disc that needs to be brought into the spotlight once again. Naxos Japan
