A century before Rossini. The French court was enamored with the canonical operas of the French court, and with the geniuses of the home town! Many of you are probably familiar with the name of this composer, as Hogwood's recording of Rubell's "The Four Elements" was once coupled with a work by Detouche on the same theme. He was born between Couperin and Vivaldi and lived until the middle of the 18th century. He was still under the influence of Lully at the age of 17. He was one of the leading figures in bringing new life to French-language stage music at the end of the 17th century, when Lully's influence was still strong and Louis XIV took a liking to him, before Rameau took over in Paris. His "Semiramis" (1718), which featured both female and male voices with a full orchestral background, was a great success.This is an earlier example than Voltaire's play "Semiramis" (1746), on which Rossini's "Semiramide" (1823) was based, but the fact that Voltaire wrote his novel "Détouche de Siam" in 1767 also shows the extent of Détouche's fame, which continued long after his death. The novel was written in 1767 by Voltaire, who wrote "Detouche of Siam". The story of the tragic fate of Semiramis, the ancient Babylonian queen, is filled with stormy scenes as well as heartrending love scenes. Set in the royal opera house of Versailles, the production features a talented cast of singers, including Matthias Vidal as Alsane, the heroine of the story. The chorus is led by Le Conseil Spirituel under the direction of Niquet, a reliable lineup. This is a performance that will make many fans of French Baroque music roar. Naxos Japan
