Santo-Colombe and Malet: Unraveling Their Mysterious Teacher-Student Relationship! Also Includes “Folia” This album, themed around the master-student relationship between Saint-Colombe and Marin Marais, features Miriam Lignol and Mathilde Vial—two virtuosos of the same generation, both from France, who master the viola da gamba. This marks the second album for both artists—featuring themselves as the main performers—released on their independent label in Versailles. The duo’s perfect harmony, with the delicate nuances unique to the viol perfectly complementing one another, is a major highlight. The first half follows the ancient French tradition of performing with just the two viols, without a basso continuo, while in the second half, a theorbo joins them for Marais’s Suite in G major, and a clavichord is added to lead into the “Folia.” The “Folia”—which was also used to great effect in the film *Morning Encounter*, which depicts the relationship between these two composers—was originally intended for solo viol with basso continuo. However, in the performance included here, the roles of the two viol players switch frequently, creating a refreshingly appealing new approach where the ensemble works as a unified whole rather than being led by a soloist. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note.
