Siegfried Wagner was born as the eldest son of Richard Wagner and Cosima Liszt. Although he originally aspired to be an architect, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a composer. He studied composition under Humperdinck. He also demonstrated remarkable talent as a conductor and has been highly active at the Bayreuth Festival in both conducting and directing. Known for having a gentle disposition unlike his father’s, his works were generally moderate in tone, drawing on fairy tales rather than grand rhetoric; although he composed a large number of works, most of them have since been forgotten. This *The Fire of the Sun* is his eighth opera, composed in 1912. It is a tragedy centered on a deserter stranded in the Byzantine Empire during the 13th century as it was crumbling under the invasion of the Crusaders, reflecting the anxious political climate at the time of its composition, just before the outbreak of World War I. Although it was temporarily forgotten after its premiere, parts of it were revived in 1979, and it was finally performed in its entirety at the Halle Theater in 2002. This video is a live recording from the Margrave Theater in Bayreuth in 2020, and the performances by a cast of accomplished singers are a highlight. Although the set design and costumes are simple, the story is enhanced by projecting various scenes onto the backdrop. The production features an interesting staging choice—singers wearing masks while performing as needed—which reflects the unique circumstances of 2020. Naxos Japan
