Mark Bebbington, who has released numerous recordings on SOMMRECORDINGS and has been hailed by British critics as “a pianist of refinement and maturity.” He has embarked on a new series of French works for Resonus Classics, and his April 2020 release of Poulenc’s “Piano Concerto / Concert Campagnard” was highly acclaimed. This second album in the series features works that similarly showcase Poulenc’s distinctive style. The opening piece, “Overde,” was written for a private concert for the Count of Noailles, who was a patron of the arts. Although intended as a ballet piece, it has effectively become a brilliant piano concerto accompanied by dance. “Le Bal masqué,” featuring the renowned baritone Roderick Williams as soloist, is a collection of songs that Poulenc himself described as a “secular cantata.” It features poems by his friend, the Surrealist poet Max Jacob. The album also includes a simple and beautiful flute sonata and a sextet featuring the effortless, elegant melodies so characteristic of Poulenc. Naxos Japan
