Prokofiev’s brilliant ballet score for *Romeo and Juliet*, brimming with dramatic tension, premiered in 1936. Since then, numerous choreographers and ballet companies have taken on the work, producing many iconic productions. Among them, the 1965 production choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, with set design by Nicholas Georgiadis, featuring the duo of Fonteyn and Nureyev, enjoyed immense popularity and remains one of the company’s signature productions to this day. In this recorded performance from June 2019, the Royal Ballet’s popular young principals, Yasmin Nagdi and Matthew Ball, star as the lead couple, breathing a youthful and vibrant energy into this classic production. It is also a delight to see Fumie Kaneko in the role of Rosalind. The bonus footage, featuring behind-the-scenes scenes not usually seen by the public—such as the sword-fighting rehearsal between Romeo (Matthew Ball) and Tybalt (Gary Avis)—is a must-see.
