La Gioia Armonica
Description:
The sound of striking the strings, and the sound of plucking them… The splendor of Baroque court instruments, as conveyed by a master musician of rare talent The star of this album is an instrument known in Italian as the “sartelio,” on which strings stretched across a box are struck with a hammer or plucked from above. Similar to the santur of classical Persian music and the cimbalom (known in English as the dulcimer), a folk instrument of Central and Eastern Europe, it is also related to the medieval psaltery; in fact, it was widely used in German-speaking courts and in Italy during the late Baroque period. It is well known that Pantaleon Hebenschtrit—a virtuoso of this instrument and a musician praised by Telemann—developed a larger version of the sarteio and named it “Pantaleon” after himself; however, this album shines a spotlight on works by Italian composers from the late Baroque through the pre-Classical period. It demonstrates just how well the salterio—which can produce a beautiful and diverse range of timbres by using different hammers and varying playing techniques—complements the sweet music that delighted the gentlemen and ladies of the Rococo era. Performer Margit Überlacker is one of the foremost Baroque salterio players, having also been an active member of the legendary early music ensemble La Pergata! While she has recorded vocal works with the ensemble led by Jürgen Banholzer—with whom she also collaborates on the RAMEE label—this album features no vocalists; it is essentially a solo album in which she takes center stage. At times, the plucked strings of the harpsichord blend with the beautiful tones of the sarteio; at other times, Banholzer’s basso continuo creates a masterful contrast with organ chords that stand in stark contrast to the plucked sounds, adding a truly unparalleled depth of flavor. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note.
