Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Berlin Konzerthaus! A spectacular performance by a stellar cast featuring programs with ties to the venue On May 26, 1821, a new Royal Theater opened in Berlin, the capital of the rapidly expanding Kingdom of Prussia. Shortly thereafter, on June 18, the premiere of Weber’s opera *Der Freischütz* was a resounding success, marking a decisive step forward for German Romantic music; the following week, the composer’s *Little Concerto for Piano and Orchestra* also received its premiere at the same theater. Designed by the great architect Schinkel—who would later oversee the completion of Cologne Cathedral—the theater was rebuilt in October 1984 under the new name “Schauspilahaus,” despite having sustained damage during World War II. During the East German era, it served as the home base for the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (now the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra) led by Kurt Sanderling, and and in December 1989, immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a commemorative concert was held there under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, bringing together musicians from nations that had been adversaries during World War II—a testament to the theater’s unique tradition in Berlin’s musical history. In 2021, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the theater’s completion, the concert hall welcomed Berlin-born prodigy Helmchen—who frequently performs in Japan— Prohaska, who has demonstrated a distinctive artistic voice based in Berlin, to record a Weber album centered on key pieces from *Der Freischütz* under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, who became the Concerthaus’s Music Director in 2019! It is also a delight to have a program that offers a multifaceted appreciation of Weber’s genius, featuring the Little Concerto—which is, of course, associated with this very theater—the overture to *Oberon* (the composer’s final masterpiece), and the overture to *Lübetzarl*, which was adapted for concert performance. Sayako Kusaka, who has served as concertmaster since 2008, also participates. Thanks to the expert engineering of renowned sound engineer Stefan Leh, the acoustics of the concert hall are vividly captured, making this a commemorative recording that highlights the charm of this masterful performance with its striking dynamic range. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note.
