Description:
Marius (also known as Marius) Constantin, a composer from Romania. He entered the National University of Music in Bucharest at the age of 11; after receiving formal musical training, he moved to France. At the Paris Conservatory, he studied composition under Messiaen, Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger. In 1963, he founded the contemporary music ensemble Ars Nova. He taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1978 to 1988 and, in 1993, succeeded Messiaen as a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts, among other distinguished achievements. Constant, who has also produced a wide range of works for television and film scores and is known for his orchestral arrangement of Ravel’s *Gaspard de la Nuit*, fully showcases his talent as a “contemporary composer”—his true specialty—on this album. All three works unfold with the rich, colorful music suggested by the subtitles he himself assigned to them. Founded in 1981 by musicians based in New York, the Riverside Symphony is an orchestra dedicated to promoting contemporary music.
