Antonacci-Gardiner-Noble's "Carmen," a masterpiece that represents French opera in its original form, premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1875, where its vivid depiction of the social underclass and tragic ending shocked the audience and was not well received, Shortly thereafter, Bizet died prematurely at the age of 36. However, the familiarity of the music and the dramatic power of this work, combined with the effect of Bizet's friend Guiraud's adaptation into a grand opera style, has made it one of the most popular operas in the world today. This film is a rare record of a performance of "Carmen" in June 2009 at the initiative of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where "Carmen" was first performed, as an attempt to explore Bizet's original conception of "Carmen" as an opera-comic (sung play with dialogue). The duo will be directed by John Eliot Gardiner, who, together with Orkestre Revolutionnel et Romantique, has a proven track record in pursuing the originality of Romantic music, beginning with Beethoven.The production will be directed by Adrian Noble, the long-time artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. The music and stage are created by this powerful duo, and the singers, including Anna Caterina Antonacci as Carmen, Andrew Richards as the wild Jose, Anne-Catherine Gillet as the naive Micaela, and Nicolas Cavalier as the masculine bullfighter Escamillo, respond beautifully with nuanced acting and singing appropriate for a sung play.
