Description:
This album contains "madrigales" from the "Composiciones de Vihuela" compiled by composers active in Spain in the middle of the 16th century. The core of the collection consists of madrigales from the 171 violas compiled by Balderabano in 1547, the 95 violas compiled by Pisador in 1552, and the 182 violas compiled by Fuenliana in 1554, and includes some with Italian texts, such as the Arcadelto, as well as some with original Spanish texts. The collection presents a variety of songs, from those using Italian texts, such as the Arcadelto, to Spanish originals. They are all written in their original tablature (a musical notation that specifies where the strings are to be held down), and are also important sources for Spanish arrangements. Carlos Mena, who performs, is a Spanish countertenor who has visited Japan before. His clear and beautiful voice is highly appreciated.
