This significant collection brings together over 400 songs compiled by King Alfonso X. In the 13th century, when the Notre Dame School and the troubadours (court poets) were active, this collection of songs recounts stories of miracles involving the Virgin Mary encountered by devout Christians. It is performed here by the Capella de Ministros, based in the Valencia region of Spain, with a diverse instrumental ensemble. As is common among many medieval music performers, the album includes instrumental arrangements; the fact that instrumental tracks make up the majority of the album here is a key feature that allows listeners to fully appreciate the charm of the medieval instruments’ timbres. Featuring instruments such as the vihuela, rebec, bowed viela (medieval fiddle), medieval harp, and various percussion instruments, this album—a hallmark of the label—offers a vivid, authentic sound thanks to meticulous engineering that highlights the natural tones of the instruments. While this collection has garnered attention not only from early music fans but also from those with a broader interest in medieval culture, the Japanese edition is quite rare.
