A chance encounter on a city staircase, loneliness in a room, an awkward phone call, a first secret rendezvous, a kiss, a misunderstanding of feelings… In this *Heart Chamber*, Chernovin meticulously and vividly depicts the emotional journey of a man and a woman as they oscillate between elation and despair. The inner turmoil of the lovers is conveyed in layers through the Sprechgesang—a singing technique that blends speech and song—performed by Chofi (soprano), Henschel (baritone), Frenkel (alto) as the voice of their subconscious, Wei (countertenor)—who embodies the voices of their subconscious—through a multi-layered narrative using Sprechgesang, a vocal technique that lies between singing and speaking. On stage, various images—such as crawling ants, a cramped room, a forest by a lake, and a large flock of birds—are projected to further visualize their inner worlds, and the final act returns to the scene of their first encounter on the staircase. Bringing the whole production together is Johannes Kalitzke, a leading figure in German contemporary music. Carefully guiding Chernovin’s complex music—which combines an orchestra, instrumental and vocal ensembles, and electronic music—and in conjunction with Klaus Guth’s direction, the production invites the audience into a surreal world that delves deep into the emotional intricacies of a couple in love. Israeli-born Haya Chernovin is a female composer known for her innovative style; she garnered attention at the 2006 Salzburg Festival for fusing Mozart’s *Zaide* with her own work, *Adama*. The bonus feature, a making-of documentary titled “We Didn’t Rehearse ‘I Love You’” directed by Uli Auemüller, is a must-see that delves into Chernovin’s unique musical vision and provides a detailed look at the process leading up to the world premiere of this work by the artists and staff.
