Ettinger’s Thrilling Drama *Faust*, Brought to Life by a Star-Studded Cast *Faust* is the opera in which Gounod, a master of modern French music, transformed Goethe’s *Faust* (Part One)—a work that stands as a towering achievement in the history of German literature—into a fluid and dramatic opera. This production, directed by McVicar, has been a staple of the Royal Opera House’s repertoire since its 2004 premiere. It is a remarkable production that shifts the setting from 16th-century Germany to Paris in the late 19th century—the era in which the opera was composed—vividly exposing the conflict and division between sensuality and spirituality hidden within the work, while also raising questions about Marguerite’s salvation in the final act. This production also generated significant buzz during the Royal Opera House’s 2019 tour of Japan. In this recording, Fabiano passionately sings the title role of Faust, Schrott brings a wild intensity to the devil Mephistopheles, and Lung shines with her delicate charm as Marguerite, all delivering magnificent performances. Rounding out the cast—much the same as in the Japan tour—are Wilson as Marthe, who delights the audience with her superb comedic timing; Tégou as Valentin; and Alcantara as Wagner.
