He is joined by François-Frédéric Guy, whose 2020 recording of the complete Beethoven piano concertos (Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo) received rave reviews, and Xavier Philippe, who has collaborated with Guy on projects such as the complete Beethoven cello sonatas (Evidence)—two musicians with whom da Silva shares a close rapport. Although all the works on this album were originally written for clarinet, Brahms himself arranged them for viola; the instrument’s rich timbre highlights the depth characteristic of Brahms’s late period.
