Description:
Aaron Pilzhan Makes His ALPHA Debut with “The Well-Tempered Clavier” Based on Unequal Temperament! Born in Austria in 1995, Aaron Pilzann studied under Karl-Heinz Kemmerling at the Mozarteum before honing his skills under Lars Voigt at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. In 2014, at the age of 19, he made his CD debut on the Naive label with an album featuring works by Beethoven and Schubert, and in 2018, he released an album on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label as part of a duo with cellist Kian Soltani. Bach’s *The Well-Tempered Clavier* is called *Das Wohltemperierte Klavier* in German, which means a keyboard instrument tuned so that every key sounds just right and beautiful. Since that tuning method used an unequal temperament—in which the intervals between notes were not uniform—it was, in fact, different from “equal temperament,” which divides an octave into twelve equal parts. In *The Well-Tempered Clavier*, Aaron Pilzan’s first release on the ALPHA label, he remains committed to this “unequal temperament” and, working with a tuner, has fine-tuned the instrument to achieve the ideal tuning. The effect is striking from the very first piece, the Prelude in C major, producing an exceptionally beautiful and pure tone. Furthermore, this tuning allows for a groundbreaking performance that specifically highlights—and consciously incorporates into the interpretation—how Bach utilizes the characteristic muddiness of sound that occurs in certain keys. Known for a style characterized by clear, crisp dynamics combined with a subtle expressiveness that captivates the listener, his performances have long been highly acclaimed, particularly in his interpretations of Bach. his fresh musical phrasing—which masterfully brings out the individual character of each piece while valuing the flow between them, without resorting to extreme tempo changes from piece to piece—and his beautiful touch are truly magnificent. Although this collection of pieces is said to have been compiled from pre-existing short pieces, in his hands it resonates with such natural persuasiveness that it feels as though one is listening to a massive work that was inevitably constructed from the very beginning. Pilzan, widely hailed as a genius and acclaimed around the world, has finally released a CD album that truly showcases his full potential—it would be no exaggeration to say so. The Japanese booklet features an original essay by pianist and recording producer Akira Naito, as well as a Japanese translation of an interview with Aaron Pilz, explaining the intent and background behind the use of unequal temperament.
