Description:
An Italian masterpiece originally sung by male voices in the 18th century, faithfully recreated by a top-tier ensemble! A masterpiece of the late Baroque period, the “Stabat Mater” by Pergolesi, the genius Neapolitan composer who died at the age of 26. Paris played a significant role in its immense popularity; from the mid-18th century onward, this work was one of the most frequently performed pieces at the regular “Concertes Spirituels.” At that time, church music was overwhelmingly sung by male voices, and even in France—where many people were resistant to the popular castrati (castrated male high-voice singers) who had taken the Italian opera stage by storm—the male singers of King Louis XV’s chapel achieved great success performing this work. This masterpiece is performed by Samuel Marinho—a Venezuelan singer who has been thrilling opera houses across Europe and recently released his solo debut album (C998201) on ORFEO—and Filippo Minecchia, who is steadily gaining recognition in the countertenor world. The small-ensemble performance—the result of meticulous research by an elite ensemble of early music musicians gathered in Versailles—is simply magnificent! It’s also a delight that the album includes Vivaldi’s motets for solo voice and the “Stabat Mater,” as well as a rare concerto in which the organ engages in a duet with a solo string instrument. The liner notes concisely explain the background of the works’ creation, making this a rich release that allows listeners to experience, through the acoustics of Versailles’ historic venue, how these 18th-century masterpieces would have sounded to audiences of that era.
