Pergolesi, Giovanni Battista (1710-1736)

Description:

An Italian masterpiece sung by male voices in the 18th century, recreated as it was in its original form by an elite group of performers! Stabat Mater" is a masterpiece of the late Baroque period by the Neapolitan genius composer Pergolesi, who died prematurely at the age of 26. The work's immense popularity was partly due to its popularity in Paris, where it was one of the most frequently performed pieces at subscription concerts from the mid-18th century onward. Church music at that time was overwhelmingly sung by male voices, and even in France, where many people were resistant to the popular castrato (castrated male high-pitched singers) who dominated the stage of Italian opera, male singers who sang in the chapels of Louis XV sang this work with great success. This masterpiece is sung by Samuel Marinho, a native of Venezuela who has been wowing opera houses all over Europe and recently released his solo debut disc (C998201) on ORFEO, and Filippo Mineccia, who is steadily gaining recognition in the countertenor world. The small ensemble performance, which the elite group of old musicians gathered in Versailles arrived at after much research, is also a masterpiece! The recording also includes Vivaldi's motet for solo voice and "Stabat Mater," as well as a rare concerto in which the organ joins the string soloists. The commentary also provides a clear explanation of the background of the works' formation, allowing the audience to experience how these 18th century masterpieces sounded to the people of the time through the echoes of Versailles' historic venue.
