A Newly Reconstructed Version of *The Beggar’s Opera*, Directed by Karsen with Music by Christie *The Beggar’s Opera* is a ballad opera by John Gay and Johann Christoph Pepusch. Since the original score from that era has not survived in its entirety, various reconstructed and reworked versions exist; however, this production—featuring a new staging by the opera world’s maverick Robert Carsen, which premiered in 2018 at the Théâtre du Bouffes-du-Nord in Paris—is a bold reimagining that transposes the action to the present day, with a set consisting of mountains of cardboard boxes arranged like building blocks. Centered on MacHeath—a handsome, womanizing fugitive—the opera features a cast of outlaws, prostitutes, and corrupt police officers inhabiting London’s underworld, unfolding as a scathing satire that exposes the hypocrisy of the era and society. With the exception of a handful of opera singers, the cast consists of actors active in the world of musical theater. The production—which blends popular and classical music and is brought to life through casual singing and acting—achieves a thrilling effect by highlighting the fact that the social customs of that era resonate deeply with the present day. William Christie, a leading authority on early music who oversaw the musical reconstruction, takes the stage alongside members of Les Arts Florissants, and the sight of them performing surrounded by cardboard boxes is sure to elicit laughter.
