Charles Villiers Stanford, a composer from Ireland, left behind a vast body of work, including seven symphonies. Although he is regarded as a key figure in the development of 19th-century British music, by the 20th century he had been all but forgotten, with the exception of a few choral works. This album features a variety of Stanford’s art songs performed by renowned baritone Roderick Williams and young tenor James Way, who won second place at the 62nd Kathleen Ferrier Prize in 2017. In particular, “Three Songs on Poems by Robert Bridge” and “The Triumph of Love” are world premiere recordings. Other tracks include “Songs of Faith” based on poems by Walt Whitman and the uniquely melodic “Nonsense Poems,” based on poems by Edward Lear—which became his final work. In every piece, the beautiful words woven by British poets are skillfully woven into romantic music. Pianist Andrew West also delivers a powerful performance. Naxos Japan
