A New Take on Boccherini! A Brilliant Project Showcasing Vider-Atherton’s Keen Sensibility Sonia Vider-Atherton, a French-American cellist, won a prize at the Rostropovich International Cello Competition at the age of 25. Having recorded for numerous labels—including Valois, RCA, and Naive, has earned high praise for her recordings. Following her LP release of “Bach: Unaccompanied” (ALPHA599), one might have expected her next release on the ALPHA label to be Boccherini’s concertos—but instead, it turned out to be a distinctive album featuring free arrangements (reworkings) based on the original compositions. The instrumentation is unique to begin with: in addition to the cello she plays herself, the trio features a cimbalom—chosen to emphasize the dance-like character of the music—and a violin to weave a counter melody. Furthermore, for G.476—which has a more polyphonic texture—a bassoon and double bass have been added. Each movement has been freely restructured around the original cello solo part, and “cadenzas”—arrangements drawn from various works—are inserted between them. The original pieces themselves are remarkably diverse, ranging from jazz to contemporary music to Baroque. While these elements create incredibly thrilling music, it is surprising just how naturally and engagingly the whole thing comes together. This is a wonderful album, shaped by the sharp artistic sensibility of Vider-Atherton herself and Françoise Rivarain—a French cimbalom player who is as active in traditional music as she is in experimental music—as well as the warm, well-coordinated ensemble that reveals the performers’ close rapport.
