Levitt, whose complete collection of Beethoven’s piano sonatas released by Sony Classical received high praise—here are some rare recordings from his early days! Igor Levit, born in the Soviet Union in 1987, moved to Germany at the age of 8 and graduated from the University of Music, Drama, and Media in Hanover in 2009. In 2005, he became the youngest participant ever to compete in the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, where he won a prize. Although he had been attracting attention from an early age, his popularity in Europe really took off after he won the 2018 Gilmore Artist Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” award in 2018. In June 2020, he caused a major sensation when he streamed a performance of Satie’s *Vexations*, repeating the piece 840 times as the composer intended. He is scheduled to make his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in March 2021. In Japan, he performed with the Bavarian State Orchestra under the baton of Kirill Petrenko in 2017, and in 2019, he gave a recital at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival, which was met with rave reviews. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note.
