This album is presented by Voces Suaves, an ensemble comprising elite musicians from the Basel Schola Cantorum. *Funeral in Music* is a German-language vocal work composed in 1636 by Schütz, who was then building his career as music director at the court of the Elector of Saxony. Dedicated to Heinrich Reuss, the lord of Schütz’s hometown of Kestritz and a humanist with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship, this masterpiece has long been recognized as a precursor to Brahms’s *German Requiem*. By situating this work within the context of 17th-century German-speaking music, Voces Suaves highlights the distinctive characteristics of Schütz’s music across generations. From Schein at the turn of the century to Rosenmüller several decades later, this selection vividly brings to life the richness of “pre-Bach” German sacred music through the theme of “funeral.” Each singer layers their voice with a deep understanding of the musical structure, creating a rich sound.
