Description:
Upon returning to Germany from his wanderings, the knight Ruprecht is startled when a stranger named Renata calls out his name at the inn where he is staying. Renata asks him, “We once lived together, but she abandoned me and left. Please take me to Cologne so I can find Count Heinrich, the incarnation of the Fire Angel Madier.” He agrees and sets off with her. Having fallen in love with Renata, Ruprecht tracks down Count Heinrich in Cologne and challenges him to a duel on the banks of the Rhine. Severely wounded, Ruprecht recovers thanks to Renata’s care and once again seeks her love, but she rejects him. Renata then flees to a convent, where she is put on trial by the Inquisition and sentenced to be burned at the stake… Although the work was completed in the 1920s, perhaps due to aversion to its radical occultism and sexual depictions, its premiere (at the Teatro La Fenice) had to wait until 1955, after the composer’s death. However, the composer, who deeply loved this work, boldly quoted its music in his Symphony No. 3 during his lifetime. For this production, the up-and-coming Italian director Emma Dante interprets the work as “fantastical realism, a never-ending nightmare, madness, sexual impulses, and a dizzying fusion of cultural clashes,” and has created a unique staging in which comical eeriness and tranquility coexist, symbolized by the devil’s breakdancing, which appears frequently throughout the production. A stellar cast of singers, led by the protagonists Lee Merros and Eva Vessin, together with the Rome Opera Orchestra—conducted by Alejo Pérez, a highly acclaimed opera conductor from Argentina—brilliantly brings this Prokofiev masterpiece to life.
