Five carefully selected historical oboes bring back “the excitement of the time the music was composed”! When one thinks of an oboe quartet—a string trio with the addition of an oboe—Mozart’s works are usually the first to come to mind. In fact, a surprisingly large number of works in this genre were composed from the Classical period through the early Romantic era. Among those works—buried in the annals of history and long forgotten—there are many that reveal their true value only when performed on the instruments actually used by the composers at the time. Bernardini, who is tirelessly dedicated to the study of historical oboes, focused here on original 18th- and 19th-century instruments preserved throughout Europe. Through a carefully curated program, he revealed the true character of oboe quartets composed around the time of Mozart. Making the most of the elegant, antique timbre unique to original instruments while masterfully performing the graceful melodies characteristic of the Classical period, he is joined by his daughter Cecilia Bernardini and her partner, Van den Munkhoff, and Simone Jandor on viola—all exceptional musicians. The string instruments and bows used are also primarily period originals. We must not overlook the works of important composers for whom very few recordings exist, such as the renowned Dresden cellist Dozzauer and Budapest’s Dolszetsky. Naxos Japan
