Aiming for completion by the 300th anniversary of the composer’s birth, this project continues to yield one outstanding performance after another; the theme of this newly released ninth volume is “Farewell.” Of the three symphonies—each of which was composed against a backdrop of departures or life-changing events—the centerpiece is, of course, No. 45, known by the nickname “The Farewell”… Just as the thrilling minor-key development—so characteristic of the “Storm and Stress” period—reaches its climax, the solo passages for each instrument suddenly begin at a leisurely pace. Symphony No. 15, written shortly after Haydn’s appointment to the Esterházy court, and Symphony No. 35, which celebrated the return from a journey that had a profound impact on Prince Nikolaus’s life, are both dynamic and stylish masterpieces in their own right. Along with the final Symphony No. 104, the vocal pieces performed at the concert that marked the end of Haydn’s stay in London can be heard in a truly luxurious rendition by the renowned singer Pio.
