A dream collaboration returns in a new format Among the concertos for various instruments composed by Vivaldi—one of the greatest composers of the Italian Baroque—the treatment of the “flauto,” or “flute,” has long been a subject of debate. This is because, although the collection of flute concertos published under Opus 10 clearly envisions a transverse flute, quite a few early drafts of the concertos included in that collection were composed with the vertical flute—that is, the recorder—in mind. Furthermore, there are masterpieces among the concertos for solo flautino (soprano recorder), and this album cannot be overlooked as one of the finest recordings that captures this ambivalent “Vivaldi’s flute” from the perspective of the recorder. After all, the soloist is Dorothee Oberlinger, one of the finest players of our time, and the orchestra is a group of talented Italian musicians. In pieces that offer glimpses of connections to folk music, the album—which incorporates the hurdy-gurdy, an instrument frequently used at the time—is a masterpiece that conveys the rich, expressive artistry of Vivaldi with great musical sensitivity.
