A Surprisingly Underrecorded Collection of Secular Works Since the 1980s and ’90s, the Clément Jannequin Ensemble has continued to showcase the appeal of French vocal music from the Renaissance. While its director, Dominique Visse, remains active as a distinctive figure in Baroque opera, this marks the ensemble’s first recording in several years. It is particularly gratifying that this release focuses on the French Renaissance repertoire—a genre in which their musicality and theatrical presence truly shine—and that they have dedicated an entire album to exploring the secular chansons of Josquin des Prez. Josquin was active during the late 15th to early 16th centuries, when the Flemish School was at the height of its prominence, and his immense fame spread throughout Europe, reaching as far as Italy and the North. While relatively large-scale church music is frequently recorded today, systematic recordings of secular chansons—another core area of his work—are far fewer in number. The track selection for this new recording comprehensively covers the key elements of his work, including not only numerous little-known masterpieces but also the instrumental version of “A Thousand Sorrows,” a piece that inspired a steady stream of derivative works even after his death.
