Description:
Georgy Katoir is a French-Russian pianist and composer. Although he majored in mathematics at Moscow State University, he could not give up his dream of music and turned to composition. He studied in Berlin, and in Moscow he displayed such talent that Tchaikovsky marveled, "Now I have met a truly wonderful and creative talent," but in the end he received little recognition in Russia, and for a time he was so discouraged that he retreated to the countryside. It was not until 1919, at the age of 58, that his talent was finally recognized. Elected professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory, Katsur taught Myaskovsky and Kabalevsky, paving the way for Russian modernism. He left behind more than 30 works, ranging from large-scale symphonies and concertos to chamber music, piano pieces, and lieder, which are rarely performed today. However, all of his works are full of beautiful melodies and melancholy, especially those for piano, which are full of superb techniques, as was typical of Catoire's great skill. Naxos Japan
