The "Symphony in E Major," a masterpiece by the legendary genius Hans Rott, joins the series! Hans Rott—about whom Mahler is said to have remarked, “He and I were like two fruits from the same tree, nurtured by the same soil and breathing the same air.” While both composers wrote works that carried on the traditions of Bruckner and Wagner, Rott’s compositions—he passed away at the age of 25—were not recognized for a long time. His Symphony No. 1, which finally garnered attention in the latter half of the 20th century, had long been dismissed as a “Mahler epigone” (a mere imitator); however, recent research has revealed that Mahler actually quoted from Rott’s works, marking a turning point in the recognition of Rott’s originality. This “Capriccio” series aims to preserve Lot’s fascinating legacy for future generations by recording his orchestral works, including reconstructed versions. Volume 2 features three works: his masterpiece, the “Symphony in E Major”; the “Symphonic Fragment,” which served as his introduction to symphonic composition and expressed his admiration for Bruckner; and the “Symphony for String Orchestra,” composed between 1874 and 1875, which possesses a Mendelssohn-like flavor.
