There have been numerous recordings of Monteverdi's "Evening Prayer of the Virgin Mary," but this performance was recorded after a staged production by Spanish-born Callisto Vieito. Known for his radical productions, especially at German opera houses, Biate has said that he found in this work the image of the Catholic culture and strong women of the Iberian Peninsula where he was born and raised; the premiere at the Mannheim State Opera in December 2018 was highly praised for its high standard of performance and led to this CD recording ( The soloists differ between the opera performance and the CD). The orchestra and chorus are kept to a minimum and sometimes improvise, but still show dramatic expressiveness.
